Nestled in her greenhouse studio, Sue Baker creates wheel-thrown and hand-built ceramic pieces. Years ago, Sue's dream was to have a studio up and running Clay Creek Pottery, her Chiniak studio, is the culmination of that vision. Her workspace is an oasis of daylight and plants. Her kick-wheel is set-up with a view of the garden, with her electric kiln and work tables near by.
Sue moved to Alaska 32 years ago from Oregon. In Oregon, she had taken classes at Clackamas & Portland Community Colleges for five years and made pots for her friends and mom. She continued that trend in Kodiak, taking classes at Kodiak Community College taught by Elana White, Karen Anderson, Tim Southworth Mary Jane Longrich and Paul Dungen. She ended up auditing classes for the studio time and she has participated in workshops in Kodiak, Anchorage and Fairbanks.
Lately, Sue has been combining thrown pieces and handbuilt pieces. She wants to get back into creating tiles such as those she made for her home's entry way and has plans for a garden fountain. She is known for her hanging planters with imaginative detailed handle attachments. She creates, then dries, fires and glazes her pieces. Her learning curve is with the kiln and glaze rather than with the wheel. She enjoys the control she has in using a kick wheel.
She had her work on display at Kodiak's Crab Festival Art Show and also participates in the Chiniak Art Show over Labor Day weekend.
Made in Chiniak, Kodiak Island Borough, Alaska.
