In Southern Albemarle County, about 15 minutes southwest of Charlottesville, along the upper branches of the Hardware River and reaching up into the hilltops, there endures a farm, comprising 2,300 acres. About 1,100 acres is given to cattle pastures, 1,000 acres is conserved as managed forest with over 15 miles of trails and 200 acres is given to orchards yielding Red and Golden Delicious, Rome and Granny Smith apples. This is Bundoran Farm.

The heart of the Bundoran Farm concept is a distinctive, economic and social model called "Preservation Development."

Preservation Development uses limited residential development topreserve the character and use of rural landscapes in perpetuity.Preservation Development has been described as a "three legged stool."Each leg of the stool represents a different activity and constituencywhich bear an equal amount of weight.

1. Farming – agricultural work and land management activities.
2. Environmental – guided by the work of Audubon International.
3. Development – home ownership and residency on a working farm.

These three interdependent legs of the stool support a development thatis endearing, enduring and replicable.
Over the few years, some one hundred families will make their home at Bundoran Farm. Attracted to living in harmony with productive land and creatinga community committed to the active application of environmentallyresponsible principles, these families will not be merely homeowners, but stewards of the land.
