JadeYoga is committed to making the world's best performing, most environmentally-friendly yoga mats, providing the highest level of customer service and giving back to the earth with every product.
JadeYoga grew out of Jade Industries, Inc., a company that had beenmaking non-slip natural rubber rug pads for area rugs since the early1970s and for many years sold rug pads to select yogis for use as yogamats.
In fact, the birth of JadeYoga really brought yogamats full circle as the first yoga mat was a rug pad; as the storygoes, B.K.S. Iyengar was in the United States doing a demonstration onan oriental rug, but he was slipping - a student took away the rug -leaving the pad and the first yoga mat. Strangely, the yoga mat thatbecame the norm from here was made with cheap, imitation plastic - orPVC. It was also annoyingly slippery - almost useless for mostpractices.
JadeYoga began in earnest in 2000 after they wereapproached by a very savvy yogi who described the fundamental problemwith most yoga mats on the market at that time - they were slippery. As they were already making natural rubber rug pads, they approached theproblem from that angle and developed Harmony, the first natural rubberyoga mat.
They sent out something like 500 samples and gotnearly 300 phone calls - an incredible response. People had never seenanything like this and were thrilled to be able to get a yoga mat thatactually gripped. In addition, natural rubber has better cushion andresilience, making it more comfortable. Finally, tapped from rubbertrees, natural rubber is a renewable resource and these mats are made inthe United States in compliance with U.S. environmental laws andcontain no PVCs - making these mats the first "green" yoga mats.
JadeYoga'sdevelopment of the first green yoga mat might be described as anaccident - as the goal was to develop the best functioning yoga matavailable. Because natural rubber performs so much better thansynthetic rubber (PVC, PER, TPE, EVA), those synthetic rubbers werenever really an option. However, the founder, Dean Jerrehian, is a vegetarian and former lawyer forthe U.S. Environmental Protection Agency where he enforced environmentallaws. Because of this, he has tried to steer the company in a green direction. So ratherthan pat themselves on the back for making the product with naturalrubber (which performs better), they said they could and would do more.
Thefirst thing they did was resist the temptation to move production toChina - where almost all other yoga mats are made today. This decisionwas made easy after a 2005 chemical spill into the Songhua River inChina - which the Chinese government tried to cover up, not evenletting the people downstream drinking the water know of the risks. This was further reinforced with all the recent problems with toys andfoods coming out of China (which almost killed Dean's own cat). Whiledollar costs may be lower with mats made in China, the folks at JadeYoga believe it is just not worthit.
The second step was to commit to giving back to the earthwith every mat sold. Jade mats are born from trees; so they decided tothank the trees by committing to plant a tree for every mat sold. Andsince 2006, through their partnership with Trees for the Future, they havedone just that.
Notonly does JadeYoga plant a tree for every mat sold, they also try to helpout many very special people and organizations trying to bring yoga tothose who might benefit from it, but might not otherwise have a chanceto try - from an abused girls shelter in West Africa to a homelessshelter in Indianapolis to supporting educational programs for childrenfrom New York to California.
