Greenfields Organic Farm is primarily a market gardening operation, with 15 acres of mixed vegetables under production in the CampbellvilleArea (map). In addition to vegetables, Greenfields Farm has some livestock: if youcome to visit, you'll see chickens scratching in the farmyard and ablind donkey wandering around. At other times, you may see a couple ofpigs. You'll also see horses, but these are part of the equine businessoperating out of one of the barns. In addition, you will likely begreeted by their friendly blue heeler, Boris, and an army of barn cats.
Their emphasis at Greenfields is environmental, economic and socialsustainability. Greenfields Farm produces their vegetables and raise their animals withoutchemical fertilizers or synthetic herbicides or pesticides, they don'tuse any genetically modified organisms, and they use certified organicseed where available. Greenfields Farm fertility management relies on croprotations, application of composted manure, and natural soil amendmentssuch as greensand. Environmental sustainability goes beyond what they doand don't put on their field, though, and includes addressing undueerosion and compaction problems before they get out of hand. Theirlivestock is raised according to organic standards: they don't use growthhormones or antibiotics. Greenfields feeds their chickens, pigs and donkeycertified organic feed, which is often supplemented with vegetablesfrom their own operation.
Producing organically makessense not only from an environmental standpoint. By not relying oninputs owned by the biotech industry, Greenfields Farm keeps their production costs downand thus farming is economically sound. Still, like the majority ofCanadian family farms, they are challenged by a larger environment whichputs the focus firmly on large operations. Greenfields Farm believes in paying theirhard-working staff a fair wage, and providing comfortable accomodation. In this way, they create a socially viable family-run operation.
