Life is too short for matching socks, especially when you can wear these fun and beautiful socks! Multi-patterned and colorful mismatched socks are available for children, adults, and now babies from Vermont's Socklady.
Over a ten-year period, textile artist Marianne Wakerlin hand knit hundreds of pairs of socks for friends and family. In the process of expanding colors and patterns, she held the hope that someday she would be able to knit these socks as a business. In 2000 that dream came true and Solmate Socks was born.
Our colorful, mismatched socks are knit here in the US at a family owned knitting mill using recycled cotton yarns. The recycled yarns are custom made for us by recovering the scraps from the production of other cotton products, mainly t-shirts. All of the little cotton scraps are gathered together and ground up so that they can be spun into yarns for Solmate Sock colors. By sourcing our cotton yarns from recycled materials we are creating an environmentally responsible cotton product by reducing the amount of virgin cotton that needs to be grown (and the toll that takes on the earth) and at the same time we are helping to reduce landfill waste.
Our recycled yarns are certified by Made in Green (www.madeingreen.com) and Oeko-Tex (www.oekotex.com). This means that the materials we use are certified to be free from harmful substances (ie toxins like formaldehyde), made with respect for the environment and with respect for human rights.
Selecting fine gifts for people you love and respect is one of life's great pleasures. Giving customers the ability to select a gift that is made with love and respect for the environment is one of our greatest pleasures. We try to 'think outside the sock' when it comes to how we do business - nothing gets wasted: our socks are knit from recycled yarns, our hats are made from our sock seconds and the scraps from the hats gets turned into rag rugs. We use what is already there and then make use of the residual.
They make the perfect eco-friendly socks to wear to work, on the way to yoga class or just for snuggling up on the couch.
Marianne Wakerlin, The Socklady, is founder and owner of Solmate Socks. A life-long textile artist, her history with knitting goes back to her mother, Sunny, who taught her to knit. Years later, Marianne picked up her knitting needles again and began creating multi-colored and multi-patterned mismatched socks for her friends and family.
"I found it exhilarating, designing a pair of socks that didn't match and were knit in random patterns with multiple colors." Within a few years Marianne had knit over one hundred pairs of socks for family and friends, and she decided to turn her hobby into a business.
The company is run in the Socklady's hometown in central Vermont. Her colorful and complex patterns are knit in the USA at a small family owned knitting mill, then finished by hand before finally being mismatched with their "˜solmate.'
